Executive Education: Leadership Succession
SHRM Recommended Readings
Linkage's Best Practices in Succession Planning
Effective Succession Planning
In this session the controversy of whether and to what extent businesses (and non-business organizations) should have formal leadership succession plans will be analyzed and discussed. Traditional succession planning will be compared and contrasted with the new “supply chain” based model of leadership development, staffing and acquisition, and examples of leadership succession plans in several prominent organizations will be presented. At part of this session, “The Next Generation at Sony” case will be distributed. You will work in teams to determine who among five named candidates should be selected to succeed Howard Stringer as CEO of Sony. The case provides selected biographical descriptions of each candidate,
two of whom are presently with Sony Japan, one of whom is presently with Sony USA, and two of whom are with other high technology companies. The teams will then present their recommendations and underlying rationale to a panel of judges, and a prize will be awarded to the “winning” team. The Sony leadership succession situation will then be compared to similar situations facing selected business and non-business organizations both domestically and internationally.
