SHRM Foundation Scholarship Program
$750 CERTIFICATION Scholarship

Thank you for your interest in the 2011 SHRM Foundation Scholarship Program. Please read this application carefully and follow all instructions. Applications must be submitted online by July 15, 2011 to be considered.

Eligibility: Applicants must have an active SHRM membership as of July 15, 2011 to be considered for an award. SHRM student members and local-only members are not eligible for this program. Click here for information on scholarships for student members.

Sixteen $750 certification scholarships will be awarded in each SHRM domestic region. Professional, general and associate members of SHRM are eligible, plus chapters and state councils - see separate application. Individuals applying for this award must be working towards one of the following certifications: Professional in Human Resources (PHR), Global Professional in Human Resources (GPHR), Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) or California certification (CA).

Scholarship funds may be used to purchase test preparation materials, attend a certification preparation seminar, and/or pay the exam fee. Individuals who have already taken the exam are eligible to apply if they tested in 2011. This scholarship is a one-time award. Previous applicants and past scholarship recipients are eligible to re-apply if they are pursuing additional certification.


Selection: Individual recipients will be selected on the basis of work experience and commitment to a career in human resources. Award recipients must continue their certification preparation immediately following notification of the award. Individual applications will be evaluated according to the following criteria:

  • 40% Work experience/progression (HR involvement & future career plans)
  • 40% Volunteer activity (SHRM experience preferred, but not required)
  • 20% Financial need


Required Documentation:

  1. Attach Current copy of your resume.
  2. List of past volunteer leadership roles should be attached or included in resume.
  3. Attach brief essay discussing in your own words why you are seeking PHR/SPHR/GPHR/CA certification and how it will enhance your HR career. Also explain your financial need for this scholarship. Maximum two typed pages, double-spaced.


Timeline: Applications must be completed and submitted online by July 15, 2011. All applicants will be notified of their standing in the fall and scholarship checks will be distributed by the end of the year.


How to Apply: Applications will be submitted electronically. All applications must include all required documentation or applicants will not be considered for an award.
